What is Caminos?

The Caminos program serves unaccompanied children migrating to the United States from other countries to help them find safe, stable homes and a path towards citizenship. KyUMH administers the Caminos program through partnerships with Board of Child Care and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). This program is an expansion of our services as we answer God’s call to serve those who are victims of abuse, neglect and/or trauma.

We will serve these youth by:

• Attending to their immediate medical needs; providing clothing, food and shelter.
• Helping them process the trauma that most have experienced either in their home country or on their journey to the U.S.
• Evaluating their educational needs and providing instruction on site
• Supporting their desire for connection with a spiritual community; offering opportunities to worship as they choose.
• Vetting their sponsor (often a family member or extended family member) to ensure they can safely and responsibly care for the child while they await their immigration court date.
• Connecting them with legal counsel to represent them at their immigration hearing and educate them on their possible paths forward.
